I needed a training collar that is unquestionably reliable and bulletproof. I also needed it to be 100% waterproof. The Dogtra Element 300M has a well deserved reputation for being both. I needed a collar that is not too big for my 40 lb. dog. Another must was rechargeable batteries that are inexpensive, easily replaced and easily sourced. I also needed a collar that can be recharged in the car, since we are often out in the field away from power for days and sometimes weeks at a time. Reasonable price was also important. After a great deal of research this is the only collar I found that fit all those requirements. I have been very happy with it so far. The half mile range has been quite adequate. To say that my herding dog is rambunctious would be an understatement. This collar has held up to all the abuse she can dish out. We've been out in soaking downpours and she's been swimming with it and it hasn't skipped a beat. Battery life is very good as long as you turn it off when you come in from the field. I'll charge it every other day just to be sure it doesn't die in the middle of the day. It could probably go several days. Your mileage may vary depending on how often you use the button and how high you have it turned up. I've used it daily over the last eight months and the batteries still work like brand new. The shock level turns up plenty high even for a stubborn hardhead. For on-leash training I keep it turned down to a level that I can't detect when using it on myself. When I first started with off-leash training out in the field I had to turn it up to about 40 or 50 one time before I started to get her attention when she was distracted chasing prairie dogs and was determined to ignore me. After the first time turning it up I've very rarely needed to go even just a wee bit higher than where I have it set for on-leash training. The vibrate function is very nice and is pretty much all I use now after some initial training. In fact the collar has been such an effective training tool that I rarely need to use it at all now. I put it on her mostly for my own peace of mind and only use it when we are around roads or other vehicles since she has a strong desire to want to herd cars which could be deadly. This collar has saved her from being ran over a few times.
